Unfixable

I strongly dislike when things break. Especially if they were costly. One lesson I've learned about having granite countertops, which for so long seemed to be the most wonderful thing, is that much of what you drop on them breaks! Long live the formica of the 60's and 70's! Formica knew how to mind its own business and not interfere with your glassware, ceramic, or china. But, I can find the bad in any good thing--including granite. Just gifted in pessimism, I guess. Wink. Wink.

Broken dishes and other items are one thing, but broken lives and broken things in our lives are a lot weightier. The longer we live, the more we see the unfixable nature of what is wrong in our lives. Unfixable without divine intervention, that is. Who of us can break addiction? Who of us can undo the wrongs we've done against others or the wrongs done against us? Who of us can glue back together the pieces of life that just don't want to stay in one piece? None of us. God alone can break addictions for us, right wrongs, and restore the broken pieces of life we have no ability to restore. God has creative power that supersedes natural ability. He can do in a moment what none of us could do in a lifetime. The understanding of and submitting to this truth is what flies in the face of all the man-made religions and ideologies this world tries to offer.  It doesn't mean we don't try to take responsibility when we personally are addicts, or commit wrong acts, or break things by our own carelessness or intention. There is personal responsibility, which is why there is an established Law of God that tells us so. But the Law of God was meant to teach us of our ineptitude to do any better on our own. It teaches us that there is no hope in us for moral goodness. There is only hope outside of us, and that hope is in Christ alone. When the body breaks down because cancer has invaded, most people don't assume they have the power to just fix it on their own. They seek the help of trained professionals who know more fully what it takes to fight the onslaught of cancer coming at them. Even if the cancer patient decides to take a more natural path to try and heal the body, they still consult books, professionals and others who have had success fighting cancer from a natural perspective. 

Why in the world would spiritual sickness cause mankind to "look within" to "heal" himself? The stakes are much, much higher. If you get this wrong, and don't get healing, there is an eternity you know nothing of awaiting you. Why would you not consult books, professionals and others who have had success fighting spiritual sickness in your pursuit of recovering?  2020 was a year of unknown and scary sickness wreaking havoc on society.  Many Christians were in fear, right alongside their non-Christian neighbors. Everyone waited to hear how bad this sickness really was and if there was a cure. Many did exactly as they were told by the government--wearing their masks, staying home, and not gathering with anyone other than those in their own household. If only we would do exactly as our true King has instructed! What life would we see then!  What recovery from spiritual sickness would we know!  

We have a cure to the seemingly unfixable things in life. But it will not appeal to everyone. Surrendering our ways, our desires, our know-how to the One who truly holds the cure takes faith and that faith itself must be a gift He gives whereby we first have our eyes opened to Him. If God has already done that, do not waste this great gift of seeing Him.  Lean into Him, learn from Him in His Word, call out to Him in prayer, listen to Him as He speaks. There is only one "fix" to the unfixable life; and He is a person. Jesus.
