it really works...

Have you ever found a product that actually did what it claimed it would?  Unfortunately, those products are sometimes few and far between.  Let's see....some of my favorite products would be, Snickers...they really do fill you up, it's amazing.  um....Maxwell House Coffee...good to the last drop...most of the time, if you remember to drink it and not leave it sitting out for a few hours...(that's another topic).  Ok, well that's only two.  I guess I don't like alot of products.  Anyhoo...

Guess what?  The Gospel does what it says..."for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes...for in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, 'The righteous shall live by faith."  Rom. 1:16-17

I needed the gospel once to tell me the bad news about myself...that I was lost and apart from God, but then it told me the good news...there was a way to be forgiven, found and united to God.  Through Christ alone.

But that isn't the only time I needed the message of the gospel.  I've needed it every day since that first day...to remind me of God's saving power.  Saving power when I am walking through temptation.  Saving power when I am low in spirit.  Saving power when my health fails.  Saving power when I begin to lean on my own understanding.  And saving power for every need out there.  I find that when my mind wanders to a path that is not joy-filled, if I begin rehearsing the truth of the gospel to my heart, I become encouraged.  My heart begins to lighten, and dark cloud hanging over me just seconds before, is beginning to clear and light is pouring in.   For instance, I get an unexpectedly high bill in the mail.  I'm angry.  I hate bills.  Bills, bills, bills!  My heart is not at peace.  Then I reach for it...the truth of the gospel.  "What does the gospel tell me in this moment?" I ask myself.  (I actually do this, though not usually out loud.)  "Um, the gospel tells me that....oh yes, that the worst bill of all...the one I could never pay, has been paid for me!  Without me having to pay it back!  Oh, yes!  This is it!  My highest, most indebting bill ever...the one I owed to God because of my sin, has been paid in full!  I don't have to pay it...ever.  Jesus paid with his life.  I'm free!"

It really works, the gospel.  It is the power of God to save.  And to the uttermost.
